December 2016 Replacing neonicotinoids and other insecticides with flowers...
In December 2016, Pr. Felix Wäckers, from Newcastle university has presented in the European Parliament the result of his research on beneficial insects. Beneficial insects are natural predators of crop pests. By planting the right flower margins next to the right crop, Pr. Wäckers indicated that yields went up (with a maximum of 30% in carrots) while insecticide use could be suppressed for the most progressive farmers. Felix margins with the right flower species provides a shelter and food for beneficial insects that reproduce and protect the crop against its pests.
